Naples Italy is NOT  the Italy that you hear about from Rick Steves.  While Naples has some secret treasures like small restaurants and the art and demijohs (used wine jugs Italians consider trash) it is a port town run by the Cammora (Mafia).  It has a huge trash problem due to frequent trash strikes wild dogs and prostitutes.  The driving is crazy and you will get rear-ended if you stop at a stop sign.

The best thing about Naples is that you can LEAVE it.  Just driving 30 minutes outside of Naples is when you see the Italy you have always pictured.  The Amalfi Coast is a short drive Sorrento is a beautiful city with lots of wonderful views.  Vietri also a coastal town offers lots of great pottery and Rome is only 2 hours away.  Tuscany my favorite is 3 hours drive and no one can go to Italy without visiting there.  Also you can go to anywhere in Europe with just a drive or a short plane ride.

If you already have orders to Naples be excited but also be realistic.  It is not what it is cracked up to be and you will be miserable if you don't go there with open eyes.  Please let me know if you have any questions. Also check out the Facebook page:  Living Abroad in Naples
